Playlist 08/06/09 > British Roma Special [Show #87]

The music of Britain's Roma is heavily influenced by traditional Irish and English folk music. It is strikingly different to the more familiar and distinctively 'Gypsy' sound found throughout the European continent. As such, while many of tonight's tunes are not strictly of Romany origin, their adoption and adaptation by the Travelling community has played a significant role in their culture. Twentieth century popular song - particularly from the United States - adds yet another facet to this already rich tapestry. Unfortunately, commercial recordings of British Roma are few and far between. Much applause should be given to the Musical Traditions organisation for making many important field recordings available to the public.
